Craps Colloquialisms

Even if you are not a Craps player you probably use many of the expressions that have derived from Craps gambling over the years without realizing. How many times have you said you are on a roll when things are going well for you?Little did you know - but that is a Craps colloqialism!

On a Roll from Craps

"On a Roll" is just one of the many famous expressions used in Craps that have been passed on from generation to generation and craps player to craps player. This is an obvious expression and implies that you are on a winning streak. There are many other less obvious expressions that are used today that also originate from Craps. How many times have you heard a company or activity being called "cold dice"? This ia also a Craps colloquialism which implies that it is not giving results, quite the opposite of "on a roll".

Boxcars and Little Joe also Originate with Craps

"Boxcars" are not just a method of transportation; it is also when a score of 12 is hit by landing two 6's. This together with a 2 and 3 score is known as a Crapout when playing. In everyday life the expression Crapout is used for someone who lucks out in a situation or is a loser. "Little Joe" is not the name of your favorite cousin although many have adopted this expression for coffee bars, restaurants and other leisure activities. A "Little Joe" is a roll of 4, with each dice showing 2.

Seasonal Coming Out: Another Craps Saying

If you thought "coming out" was just about the season and fancy ball gowns you are wrong. Coming out is when a shooter (craps player) begins to play by rolling his first dice. The comparison can definitely be made with an 18 year old who reaches her prime and is introduced to society. The expression originated with Craps and was taken by society as a good way to describe how youth were introduced to society.

And Yet Another Crapsism: Being a Natural

If you are a natural at something then you have an obvious talent, a bit like when you throw the dice on your come out roll and you land a 7 or eleven. The expression "being a natural" can also be attributed to Craps. Since Craps was and is the most popular dice game every played, so many expressions from the game have made their way into everyday vocabulary, providing clever ways to describe situations and characters.
