Learning the Language of Craps
The name of the game is Craps, which makes it no surprise that players have a secret language all their own. After all, there has to be some justification for choosing such a bizarre game name, right?
So here’s the answer: an entire dictionary full of bizarre names for every Craps move from a roll of the dice to placing a bet. Can you possibly hope to understand enough Craps jargon to join in on a game? Of course! First step, study the following guide to give you a head start on Craps lingo. Once you have some understanding of the language of Craps, you can learn the rest on the fly, while playing amongst more seasoned players.

The Basics of Craps Terms
Every player and game component has a nickname all their own. Here’s a list of some of the more important basic Craps terms to remember:
- Pit Boss - This guy is in charge of all of the Craps tables in one area.
- Boxman- That’s the casino employee that’s supervising the game. He sits between the two dealers.
- Dealer - The definition of this word may see obvious, but it’s not. In Craps, the dealers are the ones who make pay outs and place Free Odds and Lay bets.
- Crew - And you thought dealer was self-explanatory. In craps, Crew is the special word for all of the dealers in the game.
- Wrong Bettor - This is what Craps fans call any player who has placed a Don’t Pass bet.
- Right Bettor - You guessed it! This is a player who bets that the dice will Pass.
- Shooter - Whoever is currently rolling the dice is called the shooter.
Craps Terms On the Table
Now, let’s move on to the eclectic collection of Craps terms that refer to parts of the table and other game components.
- Rails - This is what players call the grooved area of the Craps table where they keep their chips.
- Quarters - Experienced Craps players use this handy word for their twenty-five dollar chips.
- Layout - This is the part of the Craps table that is imprinted and shows all of the areas where you can place your bets.
- Disk - Did you have any idea that you play Craps with a disk? This disk (or puck as it is sometimes called) is black on one side and white on the other. When the white side is up, that means that the game has begun, and the coming out roll has already been played.
- Back Line - In case you were wondering, Back Line is another way to say Don’t Pass line. And then of course there’s the -
- Front Line - That’s what some players call the Pass line.
