Craps: The Gentleman's Game

Craps may seem like a simple game but it is steeped in tradition. Craps is a game that has been played for many years in and out of casinos and the traditions, etiquette and language surrounding Craps gambling still apply.

Basic Craps Dice Manners

There are no black and white rules on etiquette when playing Craps but there are some basic principles that should be adhered to. For example it is definitely bad manners to blow on the dice before you throw them as other players have to handle them and don't want to touch your germs. You are only allowed to handle the dice with one hand and never rub them on any part of your body as you can be thought of as concealing dice and swapping the good dice for loaded dice. If you want to swap the dice from one hand to another then lay them on the table and pick them up in the other hand. Never swap them from one hand to the other directly. If you stick to these Craps dice guidelines, you should have no problems.

Craps Throwing Rules

As you approach a Craps table, you will often hear the dealer calling "Hit back wall please". This is 100% necessary when playing Craps, you must aim to hit the back wall otherwise your throw is often disqualified especially if it lands on the chips or boxman's bank. If you hit another person or their hand, then the roll is often considered a no roll and disqualified. If you are an observer and not playing Craps, make sure your hands are well away from the game as they should be if you are a player. Never bring food and drink close to the Craps table.

Craps is a No Contact Game

Craps is a no contact game. You should avoid touching the dealer and any of the other Craps players for fear of cheating. But that does not mean you don't reward the Craps dealer for his work. Often Craps players can place a bet for him as a form of tip by calling "this is for the dealer" or " this is for the boys". Craps is a very friendly game in a reserved sort of way. As long as you keep your distance you are observing all of the Craps etiquette that is required and can relax and enjoy your Craps game.
