Dice Games Like Craps
Many people are under the misconception that Craps is the original dice game and all other games developed as a result of the popularity of Craps. This is not entirely true.
The Original Dice Game: Hazard
Hazard is thought to be the original dice game that dates back before the Crusades. It is mentioned in Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales" as being one of the popular games of that time. Legend relates that the name Hazard evolved from the Arabic name "Az Zahr" which means dice, a different legend tells of a siege of a castle by the name of "Hazarth"; while the soldiers were waiting for instructions they played the dice game with carved bone to pass the time. Hazard is played with 2 dice which are rolled and the bet is made on the outcome of the dice - very similar to today's Craps.
Grand Hazard
Grand Hazard is modern day Sic Bo. This is very similar to Craps but instead of 2 dice it is played with 3 dice. Any number of players can join in this game but only one player per game can throw the dice, he is known as the "caster". At the beginning of the game, each player has to specify a number that they want to bet on, if that number is rolled at the first go then the player wins outright. If other numbers are rolled there are detailed rules as to how the game progresses and what each player is permitted to do.
Over and Under 7
This is another simple dice game played with 2 dice. The players bet on rolling under or over a total of 7 from the two dice. In addition they can also bet on landing evens which is exactly 7. There are 36 possible combinations of two dice, 15 are over or under 7 and 6 possible combinations of even 7. This is a simple and fun game to play with instant results.
Chuck A Luck
Chuck a Luck is very similar to Grand Hazard. It is a game played with 3 dice. The dice are jigged around in a birdcage and bets are placed on what the dice will show when they come to rest. In some games of Chuck a Luck, the dice are placed in a closed chute so that players cannot see them. There are many different layouts for betting Chuck a Luck and each game needs to be studied individually.
Klondike
Klondike is a game that consists of one round only. There are five dice and the aim of the game is to try and get a higher hand than the banker or dealer so to speak. 1's act the same as Aces in Poker and beat any other hand. It is a very simple and quick game to play with some good chances of winning from pure luck. There is no skill involved in this game.
From a simple cube of numbers, so many different games have developed. Dice games are one of the simplest game inventions and have been around for years. All through history they have played an important part in gaming and remain to do so. Craps gambling is only one part of this dice game story.
