What's the Big Deal? - Craps Language!

Well, you’ve made it this far. Now you’re sitting at the Craps table with the Dealer, the Boxman, the Shooter, etc., and you’re ready to play your game. The game begins. And the Boxman starts talking, so you pay very close attention to each and every word. Snake eyes, little Joe, midnight... what’s he talking about anyway? Yes, it’s true- there’s much, much more to Craps language than player nicknames. You’ll have to learn a few more colorful Craps terms to become a full-fledged Craps pro.

Craps General Terms

Some of these Craps terms are ones you already know, although you may not know you know! For instance, the first play of the game is the Coming Out roll. That’s right, you’ve heard this term before. In the days of debutante balls, people used it to mean “a first foray into the social scene.” Another Craps favorite is “On a Roll.” Nowadays, people mean that they’re having repeated success when they use this colloquialism, but the term originated with the game of Craps, where repeated success is quite literally all about a roll of the dice. What other familiar terms can you expect to hear around a Craps table? “Cold dice” is an expression you may have heard before. This Craps term means that the dice just aren’t hot tonight, and in the rest of the world, people use it to imply the same thing about a party or event.

Getting Down to the Nitty Gritty of Craps Language

Now it’s time to dwell on the details. In the game of Craps, there’s a special name for each and every roll of the dice.

  • Cross Eyes, Little Pheobe - You’ll hear this on a roll of one and two.
  • Little Joe (from Kokomo) - remember him? This is slang for the number four.
  • Thirty-two juice roll - That’s slang for a roll of two and three.
  • My sister - The number six.
  • Skinny Dugan - A seven.
  • Ada from Decatur or Square Pair - Both of these expressions mean a pair of fours.
  • Nine from Pasadena, My Carolina - Sounds exotic, these both mean the number nine.
  • Big Dick - The number ten, also known as Puppy Paws when made up of two fives.
  • Yo - Eleven, that is
  • Boxcars - That’s a roll of six and six.
There’s no doubt you’ll hear many more unique dice roll terms once you start to play, but if you’ve mastered this list, you have all you need to get started.

All About the Craps Bets

  • Come/ Don’t Come Bet - This is the same bet as Pass/Don’t Pass, except that it is placed after the Coming Out roll.
  • Free Odds Bet - This is a bet on a number combination that gets paid out at the true odds of rolling the those numbers
  • Buy Bet - You can place a bet on 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10 being rolled before a seven and pay the house a 5% commission to get true odds on the bet.
  • Hard Way Bet - This is a bet that two identical numbers will be rolled together before the total comes up in any other combination or before a seven is rolled.
